Roofing in Davenport, Iowa
Davenport, in Scott County on the Mississippi River, is the largest of Iowa's Quad Cities. Here is what Davenport homeowners should know before a roof project.
Roof permits in Davenport
The City of Davenport has a dedicated online Roofing, Siding, Windows & Doors Permit Application for replacements, which asks about tear-off, existing layers and roof size. The city says staff process the application, send an invoice for fees once approved, and issue the permit after payment. Questions go to building staff at 563-326-7745. Ask your roofer to confirm in writing that they will pull this permit.
Permit rules change, so treat this as a starting point and confirm with the city. Iowa's Attorney General advises caution if a contractor avoids discussing permits or inspections.
After a hail or wind storm
Davenport is served by the NWS Quad Cities office of the National Weather Service, which issues local warnings and storm reports. To see past hail and wind reports for your county, search NOAA's Storm Events Database.
After a storm, the Iowa Insurance Division suggests inspecting damage only when it is safe, taking photos, making temporary repairs such as tarping to prevent more damage, and contacting your insurance company. Be careful with door-to-door crews: the Iowa Attorney General's storm-chaser warning urges homeowners to get multiple estimates, check a contractor's reputation before signing or paying, and avoid large up-front payments. See our guides to hail damage claims and storm-chaser roofers.
Winter: ice dams
Iowa winters can cause ice dams along roof edges, which can push meltwater under shingles. The usual fix is inside the attic: air sealing, insulation and ventilation. Our ice dam guide explains the causes and safe steps.
Check a roofer's Iowa registration
Iowa's Department of Inspections, Appeals, and Licensing requires construction contractors, including roofers, who earn at least $2,000 a year from construction to register with the state. Ask for the registration number and look it up in the state contractor registration search. Our guide to choosing a roofer has the full checklist.
