Roofing in Ames, Iowa
Ames, in Story County, is home to Iowa State University and a lot of older housing stock. Here is what Ames homeowners should know before a roof project.
Roof permits in Ames
The City of Ames' Permitting and Inspections page lists "Replacement of siding or roof coverings" among projects that do not require a permit, while noting such projects are still subject to code standards. Other projects, such as deck replacement or changing the location of wall openings, do need permits. The page also says contractors must be licensed with the State Division of Labor and carry general liability insurance of at least $500,000. Questions go to the inspections line, 515-239-5153.
Permit rules change, so treat this as a starting point and confirm with the city. Iowa's Attorney General advises caution if a contractor avoids discussing permits or inspections.
After a hail or wind storm
Ames is served by the NWS Des Moines office of the National Weather Service, which issues local warnings and storm reports. To see past hail and wind reports for your county, search NOAA's Storm Events Database.
After a storm, the Iowa Insurance Division suggests inspecting damage only when it is safe, taking photos, making temporary repairs such as tarping to prevent more damage, and contacting your insurance company. Be careful with door-to-door crews: the Iowa Attorney General's storm-chaser warning urges homeowners to get multiple estimates, check a contractor's reputation before signing or paying, and avoid large up-front payments. See our guides to hail damage claims and storm-chaser roofers.
Winter: ice dams
Iowa winters can cause ice dams along roof edges, which can push meltwater under shingles. The usual fix is inside the attic: air sealing, insulation and ventilation. Our ice dam guide explains the causes and safe steps.
Check a roofer's Iowa registration
Iowa's Department of Inspections, Appeals, and Licensing requires construction contractors, including roofers, who earn at least $2,000 a year from construction to register with the state. Ask for the registration number and look it up in the state contractor registration search. Our guide to choosing a roofer has the full checklist.
