Roofing in Ankeny, Iowa
Ankeny homeowners on the north side of the Des Moines metro deal with the same hail, wind and winter ice as the rest of central Iowa. Here is what to know before a roof project.
Roof permits in Ankeny
The City of Ankeny publishes a Roof/Re-roof compliance handout (July 1, 2025). It says the Building Division has adopted and enforces the 2024 International Residential Code, requires ice barrier protection under the city's ordinance, and lists code sections for flashing, drip edge and ventilation. It also notes a roof recover is not allowed where the existing roof has two or more layers, in which case a tear-off is required. The city's Permit Guidelines page lists Community Development at 515-963-3550 and inspections at 515-963-3533. Ask the city whether your reroof needs a permit before work starts.
Permit rules change, so treat this as a starting point and confirm with the city. Iowa's Attorney General advises caution if a contractor avoids discussing permits or inspections.
After a hail or wind storm
Ankeny is served by the NWS Des Moines office of the National Weather Service, which issues local warnings and storm reports. To see past hail and wind reports for your county, search NOAA's Storm Events Database.
After a storm, the Iowa Insurance Division suggests inspecting damage only when it is safe, taking photos, making temporary repairs such as tarping to prevent more damage, and contacting your insurance company. Be careful with door-to-door crews: the Iowa Attorney General's storm-chaser warning urges homeowners to get multiple estimates, check a contractor's reputation before signing or paying, and avoid large up-front payments. See our guides to hail damage claims and storm-chaser roofers.
Winter: ice dams
Iowa winters can cause ice dams along roof edges, which can push meltwater under shingles. The usual fix is inside the attic: air sealing, insulation and ventilation. Our ice dam guide explains the causes and safe steps.
Check a roofer's Iowa registration
Iowa's Department of Inspections, Appeals, and Licensing requires construction contractors, including roofers, who earn at least $2,000 a year from construction to register with the state. Ask for the registration number and look it up in the state contractor registration search. Our guide to choosing a roofer has the full checklist.
